How to read this list

A university appears here if it runs at least one course that leads to registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). That approval is the thing that matters: an unapproved course in the same subject will not let you register, and without registration you cannot use the protected title or be appointed to the job. Of the 11 providers listed, 2 teach more than one field of nursing and 9 teach a single one.

Grouping by region is not decoration. A large part of every pre-registration course is supervised clinical placement rather than classroom time, and those placements are arranged with NHS trusts and health boards near the university. Studying in one region usually means learning that region's services, meeting the people who will later interview you, and — if you stay — walking into a first post where you already know the systems. It also means the practical questions matter: how far the furthest placement is, whether you will need a car, and what the travel reimbursement rules are where you study. South East has the largest concentration in England here, with 2 providers.

The nation you study in changes what you pay and what you are paid back. Tuition fees, bursaries and maintenance support are set separately in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and the NHS pay scale you start on differs by nation as well. Registration itself is UK-wide, so a degree approved in Cardiff or Glasgow lets you work anywhere in the UK — but the money on the way through is a national question, not a UK one.

Universities with the widest nursing offer

Breadth is worth something if you are undecided, or if you want interprofessional teaching with the people you will later work alongside on a ward round.
