What a band 7 mental health nurse actually does

Band 7 is advanced practice, team leadership, or both. Clinically it means the most complex work in the specialty and the referrals other clinicians escalate; managerially it means responsibility for a team, a rota and a budget line. The two versions of the job feel very different day to day, and it is worth reading a band 7 advert carefully to see which one it is. Progression here depends on a post existing rather than on time served, which is why this is where nursing careers most often plateau.

The setting changes the job more than the band does. Mental Health Nurses work in psychiatric wards, specialist mental health units, community mental health teams and clients' homes, and a band 7 post in one of those looks very different from a band 7 post in another — same evaluation, same money, different week. When you compare two adverts at this band, the questions that separate them are the caseload mix, the rota, and whether the service is staffed to establishment.

Mental health nurses support and promote recovery for people experiencing a wide range of mental health conditions, from medication management to recommending therapies and structured social activities. They build trusting relationships quickly and are trained to identify the risk of self-harm or harm to others, working closely with GPs, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and occupational therapists. Mental health nurses practise across psychiatric wards, specialist units and community settings, including clients' own homes.

Getting to band 7

You get to band 7 through open competition for a post that has to exist first. Employers look for depth in a single specialty, a track record of leading others, and usually formal post-registration study — master's-level modules are common, a full master's less so but increasingly expected in advanced practice roles. The realistic constraint is supply: a service might hold ten band 6 posts and two band 7s, so the wait is often about turnover rather than readiness.

Coming from band 6: the top of band 6 in England is £48,117 and band 7 starts at £49,387. If you are already at the top of the band below, the immediate rise on promotion is smaller than the gap between the two starting salaries suggests — what you gain is the ceiling you are moving under, not the step itself. Where you are placed within band 7 depends on the employer's assessment of your relevant experience; starting above the bottom point happens, but it is not automatic.

One thing worth planning around: basic pay is not the whole payslip. Unsocial hours enhancements for nights, weekends and bank holidays, and on-call availability payments, are paid on top where the service runs them, and they can separate two band 7 posts advertised at identical salaries. The NHS pension — a defined benefit career-average scheme with a substantial employer contribution — comes off before you see it and is genuinely part of what the post pays.
