Paying for it

Full-time pre-registration study in Northern Ireland is normally funded through a tuition fee loan and a maintenance loan from the student finance body for the nation you study in, topped up by whatever health-specific support that nation runs. Nursing students are treated more generously than most because placements make part-time work hard to sustain.

The NHS Learning Support Fund is an England-only scheme, so it does not apply here. Northern Ireland runs its own arrangements instead.

• Department of Health (NI) Nursing Bursary — Northern Ireland's Department of Health (DoH) fully funds nursing and midwifery degree places at Queen's University Belfast and Ulster University, covering adult, children's/young people's, mental health and learning disability nursing. DoH pays tuition fees in full and provides a non-means-tested bursary, paid monthly, to help with living costs. Students on DoH-funded nursing and midwifery places are not eligible for additional Student Finance NI support.
